In 1957 O.A.S.TH. was founded by Legislative Decree 3721, according to which O.A.S.TH. undertakes exclusively the service of the city’s urban transport, by signing a relevant contract with the Greek State. At the same time, tramways are abolished and, consequently, trams are withdrawn from traffic. Currently, the fleet of OASTH amounts to 283 buses of 60 and 80 seats.
Between 1963 and 1977, 283 new buses of 100 seats are released and move on the roads of Thessaloniki.
In 1978 OASTH acquires the first articulated buses in Greece, with 150 seats.
In 1979, Law 866/79 extended urban transport to the suburban area of Thessaloniki, merging part of the KTEL of the Prefecture of Thessaloniki and at the same time extending the duration of the contract with the Greek State until 2000. At the same time, another form of semi-urban coastal transport, which was carried out with small ships that served mainly holiday needs during the summer months, with coastal lines to Aretsou – Perea – Agia Triada, ceased to operate.
On April 30, 2001, Law 2898/2001 signed the Third Financial Agreement between the Greek State and OASTH, valid until 2009.
On August 4, 2003, an additional financial agreement was signed between the Greek State and OASTH – also valid until 2009 – by which the transport area of OASTH was extended to 15 new Municipalities (Kallithea, Agios Athanasios, Chalastra, Axios, Chalkidona, Koufalia, Mygdonia, Assiros, Lachanas, Lagadas, Koronia, Thermi, Vasilika, Mikra, Epanomi), 12 new bus lines were established and 48 extra buses were added to OASTH.
On January 11, 2008, the Fourth financial agreement between the Greek State and OASTH was signed, by which the number of OASTH’s buses was increased by 64, rising up the total number of O.A.S.TH’ s buses to 600 and, additionally, the concession for the execution of urban transport was extended up to two (2) years from the completion of the METRO works and its extensions.
On April 8, 2010, the supplementary financial agreement between the Greek State and OASTH was signed, ratified by Law 3897/2010, which increased the number of OASTH’ s buses by 18 and at the same time ensured the service of nine (9) Municipalities of the District of Lagadas, through the combined use of buses of OASTH and buses of KTEL of Thessaloniki, with a significant reduction in travel costs (urban ticket or 50% of KTEL).
On July 26, 2017, OASTH is nationalized. With law 4482/2017 there is now a new regulatory framework for urban transport in the urban complex of Thessaloniki and OASTH is put into liquidation / financial clearance.
